Free AI Tools for Students 2026: What's Actually Still Live
Search "free AI tools for students" and you'll get a dozen nearly identical lists. The problem is that most of them were written months ago and never rechecked. Offers expire, regions change, and tiers get renamed. Here's what's confirmed active as of early September 2026, checked directly against each vendor's own page

What's genuinely free, not a trial?
Google's AI Pro/Plus student offer relaunched on August 19, 2026. US students verified through SheerID get 12 months of AI Pro free; students in over 140 other countries get the AI Plus tier instead. Both include Gemini 3.1 Pro-level access, Deep Research, NotebookLM Plus, and 2TB of Google One storage. Claim before December 31, 2026.
NotebookLM needs no student status at all, just a Google account. Its main advantage is that answers come only from documents you upload, lecture notes, PDFs, slides, which cuts down the risk of a chatbot confidently making things up about your specific course material.
GitHub Copilot moved to a dedicated "Copilot Student" tier in March 2026. It's not full Copilot Pro, but verified students still get unlimited code completions plus 200 AI credits a month, claimed through GitHub Education with a school email or student ID.
What about Canva?
Canva Education is fully free, but only for K-12 students and teachers. University students generally get the standard free tier or a 30-day Canva Pro trial, not the full Education access. This distinction gets blurred in a lot of listicles, so it's worth being precise about it.
What's dead and still being recommended?
- The 2025 two-month ChatGPT Plus student promo, closed since May 31, 2025.
- Any individual Claude student discount. It doesn't exist. Claude for Education is a university-wide license your school has to purchase, not something an individual student signs up for.
- Student pricing for Midjourney, Jasper, and most creative AI tools, none of which have ever run a student program in 2026.
Why does the US vs global split matter so much?
A huge share of "free AI for students" content is written from a US perspective and assumes every offer applies everywhere. It usually doesn't. We've flagged explicitly which offers above are US-only versus genuinely global, because that's the detail that trips readers up right when they're mid-verification and suddenly find out their country isn't eligible.
Our take
The pattern across every verified offer here is the same: real, standing student programs come from companies large enough to run formal verification infrastructure like SheerID or GitHub Education. If a "free AI tool" claim can't point you to that kind of official verification flow, it's either a trial being repackaged as a discount, or it's already expired. Treat that as the filter, not the tool's name.
